New for 2009 we now offer trailer training in and around Perth. The vehicle used for training is a Peugeot 308 with a 1400Kg G.Wt trailer.

Our trailer courses cover all aspects of trailer towing, including hitching and unhitching, loading, sheeting/roping, reversing and safe handling/driving of trailers and caravans.

Instructors are Approved Driving Instructors (ADI's) who have many years experience of driving much larger than B+E.

If you passed a car test on or after 1 January 1997 you have entitlement to drive vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes MAM and with up to 8 passenger seats which may also be coupled with a trailer up to 750kgs MAM (allowing a combined weight up to 4.25 tonnes MAM) OR a trailer over 750kgs MAM provided the MAM of the trailer does not exceed the unladen weight of the towing vehicle, and the combination does not exceed 3.5 tonnes MAM.

MAM-Maximum authorised mass or Gross vehicle weight G.V.W

An example combination that can be driven on Cat. B licence :  Car with unladen weight 1200Kg + Trailer with MAM 1000Kg is legal.

An example combination that would require Cat. B+E test pass : Car as above unladen weight 1200Kg + Trailer with MAM 1400KG as the trailers gross weight could exceed the unladen weight of the towing vehicle. Note for it to require a B+E licence it is the maximum weight that the trailer is 'plated' to carry that is important NOT the actual weight.

B+E tests  last around 1 hour and will be conducted from the Perth LGV test centre on Arran Road Perth. The test will start with 5 safety questions relating to your vehicle followed by a reversing exercise carried out in the manoeuvring area (off road) and then a controlled stop exercise. Once you have completed these exercises you will go out on your drive, the drive will consist of a varied route taking in town driving, country roads, motorway/dual carriageway. When you have completed the drive and returned to the test centre you will be asked to un-couple the trailer, move the car away from the trailer, then re-couple.
